North Cornwall’s Independent Family Run Coal Merchant
R & N Fuels has been successfully run for the last 20 years by brothers Roger and Colin Nicholls who took over the business from Arthur Nicholls and Mick Richards. Arthur is their Uncle and he and Mick founded the business in 1985 after working for a succession of coal merchants.
Arthur’s father (Roger and Colin’s grandfather) secured Arthur a job at what was then Old and Sons of Otterham Station in the early 1960’s when all the coal came in by train and had to be unloaded by shovel! This then is the third generation connected with the trade and their commitment is the same as it has always been.
We pride ourselves in providing quality Defra approved fuels with a prompt and reliable service.
Roger and Colin are always pleased to advise customers about the correct fuel for their appliance, or to discuss any queries related to the coal trade.

All coal merchants who belong to the Approved Coal Merchants Scheme support and follow the Coal Trade Code. It makes good sense to make sure the person you are buying from has your interests at heart.

The Coal Merchants Federation of Great Britain (CMF) represents retail merchant members who are also members of the Approved Coal Merchants Scheme and agree to uphold its Code of Practice.

- PRODUCT RANGE - We stock a number of smokeless fuels to suit every type of fire, from open fires, to multi-fuel stoves, Rayburns and Agas. We also stock hardwood, kiln dried logs and kindling. Please contact us to provide a fuel for you.
- DELIVERY - We deliver to certain areas on certain days. Please see our “Delivery areas” and contact us to find your delivery day.
- PAYMENT - We accept cash/cheques or payment can be made direct by BACS
Deliveries are made using our own modern fleet built to achieve access, not only to urban areas, but also to village lanes and narrow drives.
